Call on Boris Johnson to protect UK aid
This week, the government is considering a proposal to scrap the department that has, for over 20 years, led the fight against global poverty: the Department for International Development (DFID).
UK aid is life-changing. It helps girls in warzones stay in school, it stops babies from dying of preventable illnesses, it provides safe spaces for survivors of violence.
Read moreThanks to DFID, 32.6 million people have been helped by UK aid since 2015.
Following an outcry from campaigners like you, the government has said it is willing to reconsider this proposal. Now is the time to send the government a message.
Call on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to make the right decision – and save the Department for International Development.
Dear Boris Johnson, UK aid stands for the best of Britain’s values. Aid is life changing – it helps girls stay in school when war rages around them, it stops babies from dying of preventable illnesses, it provides safe spaces for survivors of violence, and it helps people back into work so they can rebuild their lives after conflict and crisis. As a British taxpayer, I am proud of UK aid and of the life-changing and life-saving work of the Department for International Development (DFID). There is no case for scrapping DFID. DFID has stood as a beacon of British compassion for more than 20 years. Scrapping it would undermine our aid programme and undermine our reputation as an outward looking nation. I call on the Prime Minister to rule out scrapping DFID and instead to focus on making sure other government departments who do spend a small amount of the aid budget are as effective, efficient, and transparent as DFID. Yours sincerely,
